How can I go about telling him about this?

Well i think the best way to approach the situation would be to explain to him how great the program at his university is and just talk about how you qualify for it and all the things you like about the program. Im sure he will get the point that you love the program and that the reason you are going, also because he is a close friend of yours. Best of luck :)
