What is prepared pesto?

I am making lunch for my cousin who is laid up because i knee surgery. His mother doesn't like me so i really want to impress her, while feeding him a delicious lunch. I found a wonderful recipe of Rachel Ray's but i am confused on what exactly pesto is. Is it simply spaghetti sauce?
