Cooler room with fan on, door opened or closed?

My brother and I share a room and he thinks for it to be cooler leave the fan on and leave the door opened to "let the hot air out" and when you close the door your "blowing around the hot air" but I think you should close the door to keep the coolness in. What's the right reasoning?
